Koshi Province
Land of Everest, tea gardens and eastern Himalayan adventure
Discover Koshi Province, a remarkable destination in eastern Nepal where majestic Himalayan peaks, lush green hills, fertile plains, ancient cultures, and diverse communities come together. Stretching from the lowlands to some of the highest mountains on Earth, Koshi offers an incredible variety of landscapes and experiences.
The province is home to Mount Everest, as well as iconic trekking destinations, including the Everest region and Makalu-Barun landscapes. Beyond the mountains, visitors can explore peaceful villages, dense forests, rivers, waterfalls, wildlife habitats, and culturally rich towns. The region is also deeply connected to the traditions and heritage of communities such as the Sherpa, Rai, Limbu, Newar, and many others.
Koshi is a destination for both adventure and discovery. Trek through spectacular mountain trails, experience authentic village life, visit sacred cultural sites, encounter unique Himalayan wildlife, or simply enjoy the breathtaking scenery of eastern Nepal.
Whether you are seeking a challenging Himalayan adventure, a cultural journey, or a peaceful escape into nature, Koshi Province offers experiences that are diverse, authentic, and unforgettable. Explore its mountains, meet its people, and discover the many stories that make eastern Nepal truly special.
Nature and Mountains
Few provinces anywhere pack in as much vertical range as Koshi. Its territory runs from under 100 metres in the Terai plains of Jhapa and Morang, through the forested mid-hills of Dhankuta, Terhathum, Bhojpur, Khotang and Okhaldhunga, up to three of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre peaks within the province: Everest (8,849 m) and Lhotse (8,516 m) in Solukhumbu, Kanchenjunga (8,586 m) in Taplejung, and Makalu (8,485 m), the world's fifth-highest mountain, in Sankhuwasabha district's Makalu Barun region. This range of elevation gives Koshi an unusually wide mix of ecosystems for a single province, from subtropical forest to alpine tundra.
Culture and Communities
Koshi Province is home to a wide range of communities across its hill and plains districts. The high Khumbu and its approaches are the historic home of the Sherpa people, whose Buddhist monasteries and mountaineering heritage shape the Everest region. Further south and east, the mid-hill districts of Taplejung, Panchthar, Terhathum, Dhankuta, Bhojpur, Khotang and Okhaldhunga are home to Kirat communities — principally Limbu and Rai — with their own languages and the Kirat Mundhum spiritual tradition; Terhathum in particular is known for its tradition of weaving Dhaka fabric. Khotang's Halesi Mahadev, a limestone cave shrine sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, is one of the region's most important pilgrimage sites. In the Terai lowlands, Morang and Jhapa are more ethnically and religiously mixed, with Morang's capital Biratnagar standing as Nepal's second-largest city and the commercial centre of the eastern region.
