Jhapa

The fertile gateway where the sun greets the east

Jhapa is Nepal's easternmost district, a flat Terai plain bordering both India and the Mechi River, and one of the country's most agriculturally productive corners of Koshi Province.

Alongside rice and jute farming, Jhapa's eastern hills share in Nepal's tea industry, with estates around Kanyam and Fikkal complementing the more famous gardens of neighbouring Ilam district.

The district sits at Nepal's gateway to India's Siliguri corridor and Darjeeling, making it a natural, if lesser-visited, entry point for travellers approaching eastern Nepal overland.

Culture

People & Culture

Jhapa's population is ethnically diverse, spanning hill migrant communities, Rajbanshi and other indigenous Terai groups, and a smaller Nepali-Bhutanese refugee-descended population resettled in the district. Its economy leans heavily on agriculture and, in its eastern hills, tea cultivation shared with neighbouring Ilam. The district's flat, fertile character sets it apart from the mountainous image most associate with Koshi Province.
