Terhathum

Capital of Dhaka fabric, woven with culture and rhododendrons

Terhathum is Nepal's recognised centre of Dhaka fabric weaving, a small mid-hill district in Koshi Province known for its textile tradition and rhododendron-covered ridgelines.

Its capital, Myanglung, remains the country's main production hub for hand-woven Dhaka cloth, used in Nepal's traditional Dhaka topi caps and shawls.

Terhathum's compact size and hill scenery make it an easy add-on for travellers already exploring the wider Kanchenjunga foothills.

Culture

People & Culture

Terhathum is home to a mix of Limbu and Rai weaving communities whose handloom Dhaka fabric is recognised across Nepal, most visibly in the Dhaka topi cap worn on formal occasions nationwide. Myanglung's weaving workshops continue a craft passed down through generations, making the district a centre of intangible cultural heritage rather than a trekking destination.
