About HSJ
We started in Kathmandu.
Singapore came later.
Himalayan Social Journey has been running trips in Nepal since long before there was an office in Singapore. The guides did not come from an agency roster — most of them grew up on the trails they now walk with our groups.
We built HSJ because the trips we wanted to go on did not exist. Either they were cheap and someone in the chain was being underpaid, or they were expensive and the money still did not reach the people carrying the bags.
So we run our own trips. Guides and porters are on our payroll through the off-season, not only when there is a group to walk. That costs more and it is the whole point.
Opening in Singapore was about being reachable. If you have a question at 9pm on a Tuesday, someone should answer it that week, in your hours — not four emails and a timezone later.

How we got here
2014
The first group
Twelve people, one route, and a spreadsheet. Everyone came back, and most of them sent someone else the following year.
2017
Guides on salary
We moved our guiding team off per-trip rates and onto year-round pay. It changed who stayed with us, and it changed the trips.
2020
The quiet years
No groups came. We kept the team on and put them to work on the community projects that had been waiting for time.
2024
hsj.sg opens
A Singapore desk so travellers here can plan in their own hours, with people who have actually walked the route.
