Solukhumbu

In the shadow of Everest, where dreams touch the sky

Solukhumbu is Nepal's most famous trekking district, home to Mount Everest (8,849 m) and the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, at the heart of Koshi Province's high Himalaya.

The district contains Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1979) protecting the Everest massif, Ama Dablam and the Khumbu Icefall, along with Tengboche Monastery and the emerald Gokyo Lakes.

Beyond Everest Base Camp, Solukhumbu rewards trekkers with the classic Three Passes route, Island Peak's accessible summit, and the quieter Solu lowlands around Phaplu, reached by road or a short flight from Kathmandu.

Culture

People & Culture

Solukhumbu is the historic homeland of the Sherpa people, whose Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, prayer flags and mountaineering heritage define the Khumbu. Tengboche Monastery, the region's largest gompa, hosts the annual Mani Rimdu festival, a masked dance ceremony drawing pilgrims and trekkers alike each autumn. Sherpa hospitality, expressed through teahouse lodges along every major trail, has made Solukhumbu one of the most visitor-ready mountain regions in the world despite its remoteness and altitude.
