Taplejung

Home of Kanchenjunga, where the dawn first wakes

Taplejung is Nepal's far-eastern trekking district, home to Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), the world's third-highest mountain, on the border with India's Sikkim state.

Kanchenjunga Conservation Area protects the peak and its surrounding wilderness, a restricted trekking region reached through remote Limbu and Rai villages rather than the busier trails of Solukhumbu or Gandaki.

The district is also home to Pathibhara Devi Temple, one of eastern Nepal's most visited pilgrimage sites, and Olangchung Gola, an ancient Tibetan trading village near the Tibet border.

People & Culture

Taplejung is home to Limbu and Rai communities, who follow the Kirat Mundhum spiritual tradition alongside Hindu and Buddhist practice. Pathibhara Devi Temple, perched at around 3,800 metres, draws pilgrims from across eastern Nepal and neighbouring India who trek or take a cable car partway up to seek the goddess's blessing. In the high north, Olangchung Gola's Bhotia community maintains centuries-old trading ties with Tibet, visible in its stone houses and Buddhist gompas.
