Khotang

Sacred caves, rolling hills, and divine blessings

Khotang is a mid-hill district in Koshi Province best known for Halesi Mahadev, a limestone cave shrine sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists and one of eastern Nepal's most important pilgrimage sites.

The district capital, Diktel, sits among quiet mid-hill forests, largely untouched by the trekking crowds of Solukhumbu further north.

Khotang's rolling hills and traditional villages make it a destination for pilgrimage and slow travel rather than high-altitude trekking.

Culture

People & Culture

Khotang is home to Rai communities practising Kirat Mundhum traditions alongside Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims drawn to Halesi Mahadev. The cave temple is unusual in being venerated by both faiths: Hindus worship it as a form of Shiva, while Buddhists revere it as the meditation cave of Guru Padmasambhava. This shared sanctity makes Halesi one of the clearest examples of Nepal's syncretic religious landscape.
