Madhesh Provinces
Fertile plains, Maithili culture and the birthplace of Sita
Madhesh Provinces is Nepal's lowest and flattest province, its capital at Janakpur in Dhanusha district, sitting entirely within the fertile Terai plains along the Indian border. Rather than mountains, Madhesh offers rice fields, river systems and one of the subcontinent's most significant Hindu pilgrimage cities.
The province is anchored by Janakpur, revered as the birthplace of the goddess Sita and home to the marble Janaki Mandir, alongside the sal forests of Parsa National Park and the medieval ruins of Simraungadh in Bara district. Its eight districts, Dhanusha, Bara, Parsa, Rautahat, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Saptari and Siraha, form the heartland of Nepal's Maithili and Bhojpuri-speaking communities.
Madhesh is a destination of temples, festivals and farmland rather than trekking trails. Visit sacred ponds and shrines, witness the Vivaha Panchami and Chhath festivals, spot Bengal tigers and wild elephants on a Parsa safari, or see the distinctive Mithila art tradition practised in villages around Janakpur.
Whether you are drawn by pilgrimage, culture, or a quieter side of Nepal's Terai, Madhesh Provinces offers an authentic window into the country's plains heritage, easily combined with a visit to Kathmandu or Chitwan.
Nature and Mountains
Madhesh Province occupies Nepal's fertile Terai plains along the Indian border, with elevations mostly below 100 metres and only the low Chure (Siwalik) foothills rising along its northern edge. The province is drained by the Kamala, Bagmati, Ratu and Kosi tributary rivers, which flood the plains each monsoon and sustain some of Nepal's most productive farmland. Parsa National Park, straddling Parsa and Bara districts, protects a stretch of sal forest and grassland that shelters Bengal tigers, wild elephants and leopards, extending the Chitwan-Parsa wildlife corridor. Away from the park, the landscape is dominated by rice, wheat and sugarcane fields threaded with villages, making Madhesh Nepal's agricultural heartland rather than a trekking destination.
Culture and Communities
Madhesh is the heart of Nepal's Maithili and Bhojpuri-speaking culture. Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi and Siraha are predominantly Maithili-speaking, with a rich tradition of Mithila (Madhubani) wall and floor painting practised in villages around Janakpur. Bara, Parsa and Rautahat have a strong Bhojpuri-speaking population, while Tharu communities live across the province's forest-edge settlements. Janakpur in Dhanusha district is revered as the birthplace of the goddess Sita and home to the Janaki Mandir, a marble temple that draws Hindu pilgrims year-round and hosts the major Vivaha Panchami festival re-enacting Ram and Sita's wedding. Chhath Puja, dedicated to the sun god, is celebrated with particular devotion along the province's riverbanks and ponds.
