Sunsari
Where the holy Koshi flows and nature thrives
Sunsari is home to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, Nepal's oldest Ramsar-listed wetland, where the Koshi River's floodplain shelters the country's last wild population of Asian water buffalo.
The district also holds Dharan, a hill-edge market town below the Mahabharat range, and Itahari, a fast-growing transport junction linking the Terai highway to the eastern hills.
Sunsari's mix of river wetland, farmland and hill-edge towns makes it both an ecological and logistical hub for travel through eastern Nepal.

Culture
People & Culture
Sunsari's Terai lowlands are home to Maithili and Bhojpuri-speaking Madhesi communities alongside indigenous Tharu and Rajbanshi groups, while Dharan's hill-edge position has drawn a significant Rai, Limbu and Gurkha-veteran population from the surrounding hills. This mix gives Sunsari a distinct blend of plains and hill culture rarely found together in a single district.
