FAQs

The Sacred Himalayas: Meditation, Monasteries & Inner Peace is a premium 7-day, 6-night tour of Nepal from Singapore that joins meditation, Buddhist monasteries and two days of gentle hiking, travelling through Kathmandu, Pharping, Kopan Monastery, Chisapani, Nagarkot and Bhaktapur. Three of its six nights are at Hotel Barahi Kathmandu, a premium 4-star hotel on Kantipath a minute's walk from the Garden of Dreams.

Singapore Airlines SQ442 leaves Changi at about 18:50 on recent schedules and lands in Kathmandu around 21:30, so the first night is simply a transfer and sleep. Your guide, chosen for experience in religious and cultural interpretation, leads you through Pashupatinath Temple on the Bagmati, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath Stupa, all within the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Site, explaining the rituals and how to behave around them.

Pharping, roughly 19 km south of the capital, is where Padmasambhava, known as Guru Rinpoche, is said to have meditated in the Asura Cave, and you spend a night at a premium 4-star hotel nearby. Next comes Kopan Monastery on its hill above Boudhanath, founded by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, which has taught meditation to visitors since the early 1970s. Where the monastery offers one, you join a short meditation or talk in English, and we confirm visiting times against its course calendar.

From Sundarijal a forest trail climbs through Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park for about four to five hours to Chisapani, at around 2,200 metres. Chisapani has no premium hotels, so that night is in the best available mountain lodge, simple but comfortable. A longer day of six to seven hours by way of Chauki Bhanjyang brings you to Nagarkot and a premium 4-star hotel. The last day offers sunrise, Bhaktapur Durbar Square and a free afternoon before SQ441 leaves at about 22:50, reaching Changi around 06:15.

The trip suits spiritual explorers, contemplative travellers, couples, professionals and active families from Singapore who are happy on a trail for most of a day. No meditation practice is needed, and the grading is moderate because of the two hiking days. Your party travels alone, on dates you pick, never a fixed departure, with a dedicated guide on the trail and in the temples and a professional driver in an air-conditioned vehicle on the roads, and this premium package is quoted on request.

Short airport transfer

Hotel Barahi Kathmandu

It all begins at Changi Airport. Singapore Airlines' SQ442 has lately been leaving there around 18:50 and reaches Kathmandu nonstop after about five hours, landing at Tribhuvan International Airport at about 21:30 Nepal time. Hotel Barahi Kathmandu, the premium 4-star base on Kantipath for three of your six nights, is where your representative takes you.

Visa formalities come first: Singapore passport holders can get a tourist visa on arrival, paid in US dollars, and an arrival form completed online before you fly saves time at the kiosks. After the short night drive, check in and rest, as Kathmandu's shrines begin tomorrow and Nepal's clocks run 2 hours 15 minutes behind Singapore's.

Summary: Visa on arrival, a short night drive and sleep at Hotel Barahi Kathmandu after the evening SQ442 from Changi.

Breakfast

Begin at Pashupatinath Temple on the Bagmati River, one of the most sacred Hindu sites in Nepal, where non-Hindus may visit the ghats and outer shrines but not the main sanctum. Your guide explains the rites you may see on the stone ghats, including cremations, and how to watch them with respect. Cover shoulders and knees for every temple today.

Then walk through Kathmandu Durbar Square, where the old royal palace and its temples stand, before the hilltop stupa of Swayambhunath and, to end, Boudhanath Stupa, heart of Kathmandu's Tibetan Buddhist community, where pilgrims circle the dome turning prayer wheels. All four belong to the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Site, listed by UNESCO in 1979, and the order may change with traffic.

Summary: A guided day at Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath Stupa, learning what each site means and how to visit it respectfully.

Hotel Barahi stands on Kantipath, a minute's walk from the Garden of Dreams and three from Durbar Marg. That puts Thamel close enough to walk into on a first evening and far enough back to sleep through.

There are 80 rooms, among them three junior suites and six that interconnect for families. The Deck, on the roof, serves Nepali and international food beside the pool with the city below and the hills behind it, and there is a spa for the evening a trek ends.

FAQs

Is this trip right for you

The Sacred Himalayas is a contemplative journey with two days on foot, not a sightseeing tour and not a structured retreat. It spends one guided day at Kathmandu's great sacred sites, a night near the caves of Pharping and a morning at Kopan Monastery, then walks out along the valley's northern rim from Sundarijal to Chisapani and Nagarkot. If you need every hour filled, or would rather not hike, this is the wrong trip, and we would rather tell you that now.

It suits spiritual explorers, contemplative travellers and culturally curious visitors, with or without any meditation practice: couples, professionals with limited annual leave, and families or friends who walk regularly. The grading is moderate because of the hikes, about four to five hours on Day 5 and six to seven on Day 6. If yoga matters more to you than walking, look at the 5-day Himalayan Renewal or the Himalayan Wellness Journey, which both include guided yoga.

Meditation and teaching sessions depend on the host. Where Kopan Monastery offers a short session in English for your dates we arrange it, and we never present it as guaranteed. Meditation here is a cultural and personal experience, not therapy.

Only your party travels, on dates you choose, and the premium package brings a dedicated guide for every shrine and both trail days, plus a professional driver and air-conditioned vehicle. Five nights are in premium 4-star hotels, and the night at Chisapani is in the best available mountain lodge, as the village has no premium hotels. No fixed departures apply.

Know Before You Go

This journey mixes quiet days with two real walking days, so a few practical points are worth settling before you book from Singapore.

What your quotation confirms

Your quotation names Hotel Barahi Kathmandu and confirms the premium 4-star hotels near Pharping and in Nagarkot, the mountain lodge at Chisapani, the meal plan, Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park fees, any session at Kopan Monastery and which entrance fees are included. Every transfer is by road, with no domestic flights. Access to sacred sites can change with festivals and ceremonies, so your guide may reorder a day.

Pace and fitness

Days 2 to 4 are gentle, with walking on paths and steps around temples and monasteries. Day 5 climbs for about four to five hours from Sundarijal to Chisapani, and Day 6 is the longest, about six to seven hours to Nagarkot by way of Chauki Bhanjyang. You need no trekking experience, but you should be comfortable on your feet for most of a day. Your main luggage stays at Hotel Barahi Kathmandu, so you carry only a light bag for two nights.

Weather and what to wear

Whatever you are used to in Singapore, 25 to 33 °C the year round, the ridges above Kathmandu run colder. Chisapani, at around 2,200 metres, and Nagarkot, at about 2,175 metres, are cool on any evening and cold from December to February, while the June to September monsoon brings daily rain and slippery steps. Pack layers, a rain jacket and broken-in walking shoes. At temples and monasteries cover shoulders and knees, and on the temple days wear shoes that slip on and off easily.

Money

Nepal's currency is the Nepalese rupee (NPR). Cards work in larger hotels and shops, but markets, temple stalls and small cafés use cash, and you will want small notes on the trail for drinks, snacks, donations and tips. Charging a phone anywhere in Nepal means 230 V type C, D and M sockets, so pack an adapter that takes your Singapore type G plugs.

Connectivity

Hotel Wi-Fi is normal in Kathmandu and Nagarkot. Near Pharping and at Chisapani it may be slower or patchy, so if you must be reachable every day, tell us before booking and we will be honest about where the signal is weaker.

Food

Breakfast is included daily, and other meals only where your quotation lists them. Vegetarian food is easy to find in Nepal. Menus at the Chisapani lodge are simple, so tell us about vegetarian, halal or allergy needs when you book, and carry a few snacks you trust for the trail.

Visas & Entry to Nepal

Singapore passport holders do not need to arrange a Nepal visa in advance. A tourist visa is available on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, which is where The Sacred Himalayas begins.

Fees

Three fees apply, matched to the visa's length, from US$30 for 15 days through US$50 for 30 to US$125 for 90. The 15-day visa covers this 7-day trip. The airport counter works most reliably with cash, so carry the amount in unmarked US dollar notes. Please note the visa fee is your own cost, outside The Sacred Himalayas package.

If you plan to stay on in Nepal after the tour, for example to add a few days of your own, choose the visa that covers your full stay from the start, as it is simpler than extending later.

Before you fly

Complete the online arrival form on the Department of Immigration's portal at nepaliport.immigration.gov.np and bring the receipt, or fill in the form at the kiosks on arrival. Your passport needs at least six months' validity from the date you enter Nepal, with blank pages for the visa.

On arrival

After landing, pay the visa fee at the counter, then present your receipt, form and passport at the immigration desk. Queues vary with the number of flights arriving, so allow some time and keep your pen, passport and US dollars to hand. Your representative waits for you after you collect your bags, and the transfer to Hotel Barahi Kathmandu is included.

Rules can change

Fees and entry rules can change, so check the Department of Immigration's current guidance in the month before you fly. If you are routing through another country instead of flying nonstop, check that country's transit rules for Singapore passport holders separately.

Flights from Singapore

Kathmandu is about five hours from Changi on the Singapore Airlines nonstop, which runs every day on the airline's schedule to October 2026. On recent schedules SQ442 leaves Changi at about 18:50 and lands in Kathmandu around 21:30, and the return, SQ441, leaves Kathmandu at about 22:50 and reaches Changi around 06:15 the next morning. Timetables shift with the seasons, so check the current one for your dates.

How the itinerary fits

The plan is built around those times. Day 1 is only the night arrival, a transfer and sleep at Hotel Barahi Kathmandu. On Day 7 you finish the morning at Bhaktapur, collect your luggage at Hotel Barahi Kathmandu and have a free afternoon before your driver takes you to the airport for the night flight.

Booking your flights

International flights are not included. Book them once your dates are agreed with us and send us the details so the transfers can be timed. If the nonstop does not suit your dates, you can connect through a regional hub on another airline. We strongly recommend a policy that pays out for delays and cancellations.

If a flight is delayed

Because the trip is arranged for your own party, a delay is easier to absorb than on a group tour. Your representative waits for a late arrival, and nothing is planned on Day 1, so lost hours cost you sleep rather than sightseeing. If the return moves, we retime the airport transfer.

Health & Comfort

The Sacred Himalayas is gentle for four days and moderate for two. The hike climbs to Chisapani at around 2,200 metres and ends at Nagarkot at about 2,175 metres. Coming from sea level in Singapore, you may notice some breathlessness on the steps of the first climb, but these are modest heights, and your guide keeps an unhurried pace with regular breaks.

Preparing for the hike

Regular walking at home, ideally including stairs or hills, is the best preparation for two days in a row on foot. Break in your walking shoes before you fly, as new shoes cause most blisters. If you have a heart, lung, knee or back condition, speak to your own doctor before booking and tell us, so we can plan around it.

Meditation is not treatment

Meditation sessions are offered as a cultural and personal experience, not as therapy, and we make no claims about health benefits. You can sit out any session, and we ask about chairs or cushions where possible.

Day to day

Drink bottled or filtered water, carry enough for each stage of the trail and take care with salads and ice outside the hotels. The sun is stronger than it feels on cool ridges, so pack sunscreen, a hat and lip balm. Kathmandu's roads can be dusty, so a mask helps if you are sensitive to dust.

Medication and insurance

Bring personal medication for the whole trip plus a few spare days, in original packaging, and keep it in your daypack on the hiking days. We strongly recommend travel insurance covering medical treatment and cancellation, which the package does not include.

Culture & Etiquette

Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath are working places of worship, not museums, and the monasteries at Pharping and Kopan are homes and schools for the monks who live there. The villages along the trail are working farms. A little care goes a long way.

Stupas and monasteries

Walk clockwise around stupas, keeping shrines and prayer wheels on your right. Remove shoes before entering any shrine or prayer hall, keep shoulders and knees covered, and sit so that the soles of your feet do not point towards an altar or a teacher.

During prayers and teachings

Sit quietly at the back unless invited forward, silence your phone and ask before taking any photograph. At Kopan, follow any guidance the monastery gives visitors about dress, silence and where to sit. Monks are often happy to answer questions after a ceremony, but not during it.

At Pashupatinath

The ghats and outer shrines are open to non-Hindus, but the main sanctum is not. Cremations take place on the riverbank, so keep a respectful distance and never photograph mourners. Your guide explains what you are seeing and where it is appropriate to stand.

On the trail

Between Sundarijal and Nagarkot you pass homes, fields and small shrines. Keep to the path through crops, greet people with a quiet namaste, and ask before photographing anyone. Carry your litter out with you, as the first day runs through a national park.

Festivals and ceremonies

Festivals can bring large crowds to Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, and access to some areas may change on those days. Your guide will adjust the order of the day and find you a respectful place to watch.

Our Support

Your guide is chosen for experience in religious and cultural interpretation and stays with you on every touring day, including both hiking days, at a pace that suits your party. Your driver handles every road transfer in an air-conditioned vehicle, and on Day 6 your guide can arrange a vehicle for the final stretch into Nagarkot where roads allow.

Before you travel

We confirm your hotels, the Chisapani lodge and any Kopan session in writing, and help with flight timings, visa steps and packing for the trail. Your quotation, in Singapore dollars, sets out exactly what is included.

While you are in Nepal

Rain on a hiking day or a delayed flight goes to our Kathmandu team whenever your guide cannot resolve it on the spot. If weather or a ceremony changes the plan, we rework the day with you.

Ask anything

Ask your guide about anything you see, from a ritual at the ghats to the meaning of a prayer flag. No question is too basic, and that is what the explanations are for.
