Gandaki Province
Gateway to Annapurna, Mustang and world-class trekking
Gandaki Province is Nepal's premier trekking region, centred on Pokhara in Kaski district and dominated by the Annapurna massif, where Annapurna I (8,091 m) and the iconic Machhapuchhre (Fishtail, 6,993 m) rise directly above Phewa Lake.
The province spans the Kali Gandaki Gorge, one of the world's deepest, into the arid trans-Himalayan plateau of Upper Mustang and its walled former capital, Lo Manthang, while Gorkha district holds Gorkha Durbar, birthplace of Prithvi Narayan Shah, who unified modern Nepal.
Gandaki is built for adventure: trek the classic Annapurna Circuit or to Annapurna Base Camp, paraglide over Phewa Lake, follow the Kali Gandaki to Muktinath Temple, or venture into Upper Mustang's restricted-area Buddhist culture.
Whether you are planning a multi-week Himalayan trek or a few days around Pokhara's lakes, Gandaki Province offers some of the most rewarding trekking and mountain scenery anywhere in Nepal.
Nature and Mountains
Gandaki Province is defined by the Annapurna massif, where Annapurna I (8,091 m) and the unclimbed Machhapuchhre (6,993 m, Fishtail) rise directly above Pokhara's Phewa Lake in Kaski. The Kali Gandaki river has carved one of the world's deepest gorges between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) on the Myagdi border, and its upper reaches open into Mustang's arid, trans-Himalayan plateau, sitting in the Annapurna rain shadow. Lamjung Himal overlooks the Marsyangdi valley, a classic approach to the Annapurna Circuit, while Begnas Lake offers a quieter counterpart to Phewa in Kaski's lake district.
Culture and Communities
Gurung communities inhabit the foothill villages around Annapurna such as Ghandruk and Sikles, following a mix of Buddhist and Bon-influenced traditions alongside seasonal transhumance. The Kali Gandaki corridor is home to the Thakali, known for their trading heritage and distinctive Thakali cuisine served in villages like Marpha and Tukuche. Upper Mustang preserves a strongly Tibetan Buddhist, Loba culture centred on the walled city of Lo Manthang and its centuries-old monasteries. Magar communities are widespread across Myagdi, Parbat and Tanahun, while Gorkha district holds deep historical significance as the birthplace of Prithvi Narayan Shah, who unified Nepal from the hilltop Gorkha Durbar.
