Bagmati Province
Heart of Nepal — ancient temples, royal cities and Himalayan gateways
Bagmati Province holds Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, at the heart of the Kathmandu Valley, though the province's own official capital is Hetauda in Makwanpur district to the south. Its territory ranges from the valley basin at around 1,400 metres up through Himalayan giants like Langtang Lirung and Gauri Shankar to the Terai lowlands of Chitwan.
The province is home to the Kathmandu Valley's UNESCO World Heritage monuments, including Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur Durbar Squares, Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath Stupa, as well as Chitwan National Park's rhinos and tigers and the alpine trails of Langtang and Gosainkunda.
Bagmati offers an unusually complete cross-section of what Nepal has to offer: walk centuries-old Newar temple courtyards, trek to glacial lakes within days of the capital, take a jungle safari in the Terai, or follow Tamang villages along the Tamang Heritage Trail.
Whether your trip centres on temple architecture, Himalayan trekking, or wildlife, Bagmati Province is the natural starting point for almost every journey through Nepal, and the gateway to the rest of the country beyond.
Nature and Mountains
Bagmati Province spans the Kathmandu Valley basin at around 1,400 metres up to the glaciated peaks of Langtang National Park, where Langtang Lirung (7,227 m) and Gosainkunda's alpine lakes sit close enough to the capital for a short trek. Rasuwa and Sindhupalchok border Tibet through high Himalayan passes, while Dolakha holds Gauri Shankar (7,134 m) near the Rolwaling valley. In the south, Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protects Terai grassland and riverine forest along the Rapti and Narayani rivers, home to one-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers and gharial crocodiles. Between these extremes lie the terraced mid-hills of Kavrepalanchok, Nuwakot and Makwanpur.
Culture and Communities
The Kathmandu Valley is the historic homeland of the Newar people, whose Malla-era Durbar Squares in Kathmandu, Patan (Lalitpur) and Bhaktapur are UNESCO World Heritage Sites blending Hindu and Buddhist architecture. Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath and Boudhanath Stupa remain among the most important Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas. North of the valley, Tamang communities predominate in Rasuwa, Sindhupalchok, Nuwakot and Dolakha, with the Tamang Heritage Trail showcasing their villages and Buddhist gompas, while Sherpa families settle the higher Rolwaling valley. In the south, Chitwan is home to the indigenous Tharu, known for stick dances and traditional longhouses near the national park.
