Attraction Points

Everything you need to know.

The Langtang Valley Trek is a moderate-to-challenging Himalayan journey ideal for travellers who want a rewarding mountain experience without the extreme length of Everest Base Camp. The route reaches Kyanjin Gompa at around 3,870 m, with the optional Kyanjin Ri hike reaching approximately 4,773 m. Expect several days of 5–7 hours of trekking, steady uphill and downhill sections, and changing weather as you move into the high mountains.

Physical Preparation: The Langtang Valley Trek involves approximately 65 km of trekking, with walking days generally lasting around 3–7 hours. You should be comfortable walking on uneven mountain trails, stone steps and gradual ascents and descents.

Altitude: The trek gradually rises from around 1,550 m at Syabrubesi to 3,870 m at Kyanjin Gompa, with the optional Kyanjin Ri hike reaching approximately 4,773 m. Take the recommended pace seriously, stay hydrated and communicate with your guide if you experience unusual symptoms.

Weather: Mountain weather can change quickly, particularly at higher elevations. Morning conditions are often more stable, while temperatures can drop significantly after sunset. Pack layers, waterproof clothing, sun protection and suitable trekking footwear.

Accommodation: Kathmandu accommodation is provided in a luxury 5-star hotel, while accommodation in the Langtang Valley is in selected mountain lodges and teahouses. Facilities become simpler as you travel deeper into the mountains.

Food & Water: Meals during the trek are generally available at local lodges and include a mixture of Nepalese and familiar international dishes. Carry a reusable water bottle and use treated, filtered or otherwise safe drinking water during the trek.

Connectivity: Mobile and Wi-Fi availability can be limited and inconsistent in the mountains. Consider the trek an opportunity to disconnect and enjoy the Himalayan environment.

Permits: The Langtang trek requires the relevant Langtang National Park entry permit and TIMS arrangements. Nepal Tourism Board guidance specifically lists Langtang Trek among routes requiring a licensed trekking guide and agency-issued TIMS card.

The most favourable periods for the Langtang Valley Trek are March–May and October–November. These months generally offer better trekking conditions and clearer mountain views.

March–May: Spring brings warmer daytime conditions, blooming rhododendrons and increasingly clear mountain views.

October–November: Autumn is one of the most popular periods for trekking, with generally stable weather, clear skies and excellent Himalayan visibility.

June–September: The monsoon season can bring rain, wet trails, clouds and reduced mountain visibility.

December–February: Winter is possible for experienced trekkers, but higher sections can become very cold and snowy, with more challenging conditions.

Emergency Evacuation: Your trekking team will monitor your condition throughout the journey and assist if you develop altitude-related illness, injury or another serious medical problem. Where medically necessary and conditions permit, helicopter evacuation can be coordinated from the trekking region.

Travel Insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance with high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Check the maximum altitude covered by your policy, as some standard travel insurance policies have altitude restrictions.

Altitude Safety: Do not ignore symptoms such as persistent headache, dizziness, unusual breathlessness, confusion, severe nausea or difficulty walking. Inform your guide immediately so the situation can be assessed and the itinerary adjusted if necessary.

Weather & Delays: Mountain roads and trekking conditions can be affected by heavy rain, snowfall, landslides or other weather conditions. Your guide and operations team may modify the itinerary when necessary for safety.

Carry some Nepalese Rupees (NPR) for personal expenses during the trek. Kathmandu has extensive ATM and card-payment facilities, but payment options become increasingly limited as you travel deeper into the Langtang Valley.

It is useful to carry cash for snacks, drinks, charging, hot showers, Wi-Fi and other optional services at mountain lodges. Keep an additional amount available for unexpected expenses and avoid relying entirely on cards or mobile payments once you leave Kathmandu.
