FAQs

Nepal's story is wider than its capital, and this is the journey for travellers who want to follow it further. Nine days take you from the royal history and great temples of the Kathmandu Valley to Pokhara's lake and mountain world, and then south to the plains at Lumbini, where Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, was born. Two nights in each of Pokhara and Lumbini keep the pace humane, and this is a premium package with premium 4-star hotels throughout: Hotel Barahi Kathmandu on Kantipath, Temple Bell Boutique Hotel & Spa on Pokhara's Lakeside and a premium 4-star hotel in Lumbini.

Kathmandu comes first, with three nights. Narayanhiti Palace, home of the Shah kings until 2008, opens the royal story, subject to the museum's opening arrangements, and a hosted Nepalese dinner or cultural programme follows that evening. The next day your guide chooses with you from Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath and Pashupatinath, with time for the history and the breaks in between.

A short domestic flight, subject to schedule and availability, takes you to Pokhara and the International Mountain Museum, which the Nepal Mountaineering Association opened in 2004 to tell the story of the Himalaya and its peoples. The next day is for Phewa Lake, its island temple and a viewpoint or short walk, weather permitting.

Lumbini is a substantial journey from Pokhara, a full day by road or a short flight to Bhairahawa and a drive, and we plan it that way. Once there, a whole day is given to the Sacred Garden: the Maya Devi Temple over the traditional birthplace, the pillar the emperor Ashoka raised to mark it in the 3rd century BCE, and monasteries built by Buddhist communities from many countries. UNESCO inscribed Lumbini as a World Heritage Site in 1997.

Nepal's Cultural Legacy is a premium package with premium 4-star hotels, a dedicated cultural guide and an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver, arranged for your own party on dates you choose. It is quoted on request, and the quotation confirms the room types, meal plan, domestic flights or road arrangements, and which entrance fees are included.

Hotel Barahi Kathmandu

From Changi Airport, the nine days open with Singapore Airlines SQ442, recently scheduled at about 18:50 and five hours nonstop to Kathmandu. At about 21:30 Nepal time you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, and your representative is there for the night drive. Hotel Barahi Kathmandu, a premium 4-star hotel on Kantipath, is your first base.

The arrivals area has money exchange counters and mobile SIM kiosks, useful if you want Nepalese rupees or local data from the start. At this hour the city streets are quiet, so the transfer is quick, and the rest of the night is simply for checking in and sleeping before Kathmandu's palace and temples.

Breakfast, Dinner

After breakfast, visit Narayanhiti Palace Museum, at the head of the broad avenue of Durbar Marg, subject to its opening arrangements, or another suitable cultural attraction if it is closed. The palace rose under King Mahendra in the 1960s and housed the Shah kings until King Gyanendra left in June 2008, the monarchy having been abolished.

Your guide brings the rooms and their history to life, from state ceremonies to the royal killings of 2001; photography is not permitted inside, so phones stay at the entrance. The afternoon is left easy so you can rest at the hotel or stroll nearby. In the evening, enjoy a hosted Nepalese dinner or cultural programme, a chance to taste dishes such as momo and dal bhat and to talk over the days ahead.

Summary: Narayanhiti Palace Museum on Durbar Marg, subject to opening, or another cultural visit, an easy afternoon, then a hosted Nepalese dinner or cultural programme.

Hotel Barahi stands on Kantipath, a minute's walk from the Garden of Dreams and three from Durbar Marg. That puts Thamel close enough to walk into on a first evening and far enough back to sleep through.

There are 80 rooms, among them three junior suites and six that interconnect for families. The Deck, on the roof, serves Nepali and international food beside the pool with the city below and the hills behind it, and there is a spa for the evening a trek ends.

Lakeside, Pokhara

Temple Bell stands at 17 Lakeside, about ten minutes' walk from Phewa Lake and a short drive from the airport, which matters on a trek: you arrive off the mountain, and the lake and its restaurants are on foot rather than another drive away.

There are 55 rooms, from 32 square metre deluxes to 40 square metre suites, finished in carved wood and local stone. Two restaurants, a bar, an outdoor pool, a steam room and a 24-hour gym, and the massages and body treatments are the point of the first evening down from Annapurna.

Good to Know

FAQs

Is this trip right for you

This is a broad cultural journey, not a trek, and it suits travellers who want more than the capital, especially those drawn to Buddhist heritage. It covers three very different settings: the temples and palace of the Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara's lake and mountain world, and the plains of Lumbini, where the Buddha was born.

The trade-off is transport. There is a domestic flight to Pokhara, a full travel day from Pokhara to Lumbini, and a return to Kathmandu by flight and road. We plan these carefully, with two nights in each of Pokhara and Lumbini, but if you would rather not spend days in transit, the 5-day Kathmandu Heritage or 7-day Art of Nepal tour will suit you better.

It is a premium package with premium 4-star hotels, arranged for your own party on dates you choose, with a dedicated cultural guide and an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver throughout.

Know Before You Go

Your quotation names the Kathmandu and Pokhara hotels, Hotel Barahi Kathmandu and Temple Bell Boutique Hotel & Spa, and confirms the premium 4-star stay in Lumbini at booking. It also confirms in writing the meal plan, every domestic flight or road arrangement, and which entrance fees are included. Everything on this page assumes daily breakfast only, plus the hosted dinner or cultural programme on Day 2.

Several things on this route depend on others. Domestic flights run to the airlines' schedules and the weather. Narayanhiti Palace Museum and the International Mountain Museum keep their own opening days, and monastery access in Lumbini varies. We check all of these for your dates before the programme is confirmed, and your guide adjusts the order when needed.

Pack for two climates. Kathmandu can be cool in the mornings and evenings outside summer, while Lumbini on the plains is warmer. Keep luggage within domestic baggage limits if you can, and carry some Nepalese rupees in cash for small purchases and tips.

Visas & Entry to Nepal

Singapore passport holders can get a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. The fee is US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days and US$125 for 90 days, and the 15-day visa covers this 9-day itinerary. Your passport needs at least six months' validity on entry.

Before you fly, complete the online tourist visa form on the Department of Immigration portal, nepaliport.immigration.gov.np, and keep the confirmation with your passport. Bring the fee in US dollars in cash. No trekking or park permits are needed for Pokhara or Lumbini.

The visa fee is not included in the tour price. Rules and fees can change, so check the Department of Immigration shortly before you travel.

Flights from Singapore

Singapore Airlines flies direct between Changi and Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport in about five hours. Recent schedules land in Kathmandu in the evening, which is why Day 1 is kept free. Nepal runs 2 hours 15 minutes behind Singapore, and schedules change by season, so check the current timetable when you book.

Inside Nepal, the Kathmandu to Pokhara flight takes about 25 to 30 minutes and Bhairahawa to Kathmandu about 30 minutes. A flight of about 20 minutes links Pokhara and Bhairahawa, but it runs far less often. International flights are not included. We always plan a night in Kathmandu after the domestic return, so your flight home never depends on a tight connection.

Health & Comfort

Nothing on this route is at a height that needs special preparation. Kathmandu sits at about 1,400 metres, Pokhara at about 820 metres and Lumbini at about 150 metres on the plains. The optional Sarangkot viewpoint near Pokhara reaches about 1,600 metres. The walking is on paved squares, temple steps and garden paths.

Lumbini is warmer and more exposed than the hills, so bring a hat, sunscreen and water for the Sacred Garden day. The hill road from Pokhara winds, so bring motion-sickness tablets if you need them. Drink bottled or filtered water. Travel insurance that covers medical treatment, cancellation and flight disruption is strongly recommended and is not included.

Culture & Etiquette

Every major site on this route is a place of living worship. Walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels, remove your shoes where asked, and keep shoulders and knees covered. At Pashupatinath, the main temple is open only to Hindus, and cremations on the riverbank should be watched quietly and not photographed.

In Lumbini, pilgrims from many countries come to pray and meditate. Keep your voice low in the Sacred Garden, remove your shoes before entering the Maya Devi Temple premises, and leave food and drinks at the entrance as the Lumbini Development Trust asks. Monasteries set their own visiting rules, so follow your guide's lead.

Ask before photographing people, and expect a namaste and a smile to go a long way.

Our Support

From your first enquiry, you deal with a team that plans and runs trips in Nepal. We reply with a quotation built around your dates and party, and we tell you plainly what is confirmed and what still depends on flight schedules, opening days or monastery access.

On the ground, your dedicated guide travels with you, and drivers meet you at every airport and hotel. If a flight is delayed or cancelled, the team rearranges the transfer or switches to road, and our local team is reachable throughout your stay.
