FAQs
The Annapurna Circuit is less a single trail than a full transect of the Annapurna massif, starting in green mid hill farmland, climbing through Manang's high desert villages, then crossing Thorong La at 5,416m, one of the highest trekking passes anyone can walk over without technical climbing gear, before dropping to Muktinath's temples on the other side.
Trekkers who want the classic route with an extra day can add the detour to Tilicho Lake (4,919m), reached from Manang before the pass. The standard circuit returns to Kathmandu via Pokhara.

Cross Thorong La at 5,416 metres, the highest point of the circuit, on foot and without any technical climbing.
Trade Singapore's 30-degree afternoons for a 4am start at Thorong Phedi, headlamp on, with the pass waiting above you in the dark.
Walk the Marsyangdi valley from pine forest at Chame to the high desert villages around Manang, several climate zones inside one week.
Take the upper trail through Ghyaru and Ngawal, above the valley road, with Annapurna II, III and IV across the valley all day.
Spend two nights in Manang and join the Himalayan Rescue Association's afternoon altitude talk before the push to the pass.
Reach Muktinath, sacred to Hindus and Buddhists alike, with 108 stone water spouts and a natural flame burning beside a spring.
Fly out of Jomsom down the Kali Gandaki gorge in about 20 minutes, between Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna massif you just walked around.

Temple Bell stands at 17 Lakeside, about ten minutes' walk from Phewa Lake and a short drive from the airport, which matters on a trek: you arrive off the mountain, and the lake and its restaurants are on foot rather than another drive away.
There are 55 rooms, from 32 square metre deluxes to 40 square metre suites, finished in carved wood and local stone. Two restaurants, a bar, an outdoor pool, a steam room and a 24-hour gym, and the massages and body treatments are the point of the first evening down from Annapurna.

Is this trek right for you
The Annapurna Circuit is the longest and highest trek HSJ Travel runs in the Annapurna region. It crosses Thorong La at 5,416 metres, well above Annapurna Base Camp's 4,130 metres, so altitude is the main thing to weigh before booking. The trail itself is non-technical: no ropes, no climbing, just long days of steady walking and one very early, very cold morning on the pass.
A road now runs up much of the Marsyangdi valley and down the Kali Gandaki on the far side. This itinerary drives the lowest, most road-heavy section to Dharapani and uses the upper trail through Ghyaru and Ngawal to stay away from traffic where possible, but you will cross or share the road on some days. Expect dust in the dry season and the occasional jeep.
Coming from Singapore's steady 25 to 32 degrees, the temperature range is the biggest adjustment. Afternoons in the lower valley are warm enough for a T-shirt, while nights at Thorong Phedi drop well below freezing, and the pass itself is colder again before sunrise. A proper down jacket, gloves and a warm sleeping bag are essential.
Accommodation is in family-run teahouses and lodges, simple twin rooms with shared bathrooms in most places, more basic above Manang. Hot showers, charging and WiFi are available at many lodges for a small fee, less reliably the higher you go.
The Jomsom to Pokhara flight is weather-dependent and only operates in the morning. If it is delayed, our team arranges the road journey instead, and the free afternoon in Kathmandu on Day 13 is there to absorb the knock-on effect. Please do not book a tight international connection on Day 14.
Comprehensive travel insurance that covers trekking to 5,416 metres and helicopter evacuation is required for this trek. Our guides are trained to recognise altitude sickness and carry a first aid kit and pulse oximeter, and a full acclimatisation day in Manang is built into the itinerary before the climb to the pass.
Know Before You Go
- Physical Preparation: This is a demanding 14-day trek crossing Thorong La at 5,416 metres, with a long descent of around 1,600 metres on pass day. We recommend 8 weeks of aerobic preparation, including stair climbing and hill walking with a loaded daypack, before arrival.
- Packing Essentials: A comprehensive gear list is provided on booking. A down jacket rated for sub-zero temperatures, broken-in trekking boots, warm gloves, a headlamp and a warm sleeping bag are essential for Thorong Phedi and the pass.
- Local Infrastructure: Hot showers, WiFi and device charging are available at most teahouses for a small additional fee (typically USD 2 to 5), paid directly to the lodge. Services become more limited above Manang.
- Permit Requirements: Your package includes the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), checked at Besisahar, Chame, Manang and on the Mustang side. Please bring a copy of your passport and two passport-sized photos to Kathmandu so we can finalise the paperwork on Day 1.
Visas
Singapore passport holders are eligible for a Nepal Tourist Visa on Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu and designated land border entry points.
Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry into Nepal and should have at least one blank page for the visa stamp.
Travelers can obtain a Visa on Arrival, apply online before departure, or apply through the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Nepal, depending on their preference.
Before traveling, ensure you have:
- A valid passport
- A completed visa application (online or on arrival)
- A recent passport-size photograph (recommended)
- A copy of your return or onward travel details, if requested by immigration authorities
The duration of your tourist visa should cover your entire stay in Nepal. If you plan to stay longer, visa extensions can be arranged through the Department of Immigration while in Nepal, subject to the prevailing regulations.
Visa policies and immigration requirements may change without prior notice. We strongly recommend verifying the latest entry requirements with the Department of Immigration, Nepal or the Embassy of Nepal before your departure.
If you book your trek with us, our team will gladly provide guidance on the visa process and pre-arrival requirements to help ensure a smooth journey to Nepal.
Rescue & Emergency Support
- Helicopter Evacuation: Emergency helicopter evacuation can be arranged from most points on the circuit for serious illness, injury or altitude-related emergencies.
- Rescue Coordination: Our team coordinates with your guide and helicopter operators whenever an evacuation is required.
- Weather Dependent: Helicopter rescues depend on weather, visibility, landing conditions and aircraft availability, and can be delayed around Thorong Phedi and the pass.
- Altitude Sickness: Serious symptoms above Manang may require immediate descent or evacuation; this is the main medical risk on this trek.
- Medical Assessment: Your guide checks oxygen saturation with a pulse oximeter from Manang onwards and decides the next steps in an emergency.
- Local Medical Help: In the spring and autumn seasons, the Himalayan Rescue Association runs an aid post with volunteer doctors in Manang.
- Insurance Coverage: Travel insurance covering trekking to 5,416 metres and helicopter evacuation is mandatory for this trek.
- Evacuation Costs: Helicopter evacuation costs are not included in the trek price and should be claimed through your travel insurance.
- Emergency Descent: Where appropriate, descending to a lower altitude is prioritised, as descent is often the fastest treatment.
- Road Access: Jeep roads on both sides of the pass mean a road evacuation to Besisahar or Jomsom is sometimes possible when helicopters cannot fly.
- Emergency Preparedness: Our guides are government-licensed and trained to recognise altitude-related symptoms and respond to emergencies.

Who takes you over the pass
Your Annapurna Circuit trek is led by HSJ Travel's own Field Guides, government-licensed and trained in first aid and altitude sickness management. On pass day your guide sets the start time, the pace and the turnaround point, based on the weather and how each person in the group is doing.
Every HSJ Travel guide walks the trail they lead rather than just directing it, watching the group's pace, breathing and the weather rather than a fixed schedule. Meet the full team behind our treks.
