Lumbini Province
Sacred birthplace of Buddha and hidden hill kingdoms
Lumbini Province stretches from the Terai plains of Rupandehi and Kapilvastu through Bardiya National Park's forests to the Mahabharat hill districts of Palpa, Gulmi and Rolpa, anchored by Lumbini itself, the birthplace of the Buddha.
The province's UNESCO World Heritage Maya Devi Temple marks the Buddha's birth site, while nearby Tilaurakot preserves the ruins of the ancient Shakya kingdom, Bardiya National Park shelters Bengal tigers and wild elephants, and the hill town of Tansen retains a Newar merchant heritage above the Kali Gandaki.
Lumbini rewards a mix of pilgrimage, wildlife and hill culture: walk the Sacred Garden in Lumbini, safari through Bardiya for tigers and Gangetic dolphins, explore Tilaurakot's ancient ruins, or wander Tansen's old Newar town and Rani Mahal palace.
Whether you come for Buddhist pilgrimage, Terai wildlife, or a quieter hill-town escape, Lumbini Province offers a side of Nepal that is both spiritually significant and rich in nature, and pairs easily with a Kathmandu or Chitwan itinerary.
Nature and Mountains
Lumbini Province stretches from the Terai plains of Rupandehi, Kapilvastu, Banke and Bardiya, through the Sal forests and grasslands of Bardiya National Park along the Karnali and Babai rivers, into the Mahabharat mid-hills of Palpa, Gulmi, Arghakhanchi and Pyuthan. Bardiya National Park is the largest national park in Nepal's Terai and shelters Bengal tigers, wild elephants and Gangetic dolphins in the Karnali. Further north, hill towns such as Tansen in Palpa sit above 1,300 metres amid terraced farmland, while Rolpa and Rukum East climb toward the Mahabharat range on the province's northern edge.
Culture and Communities
Lumbini in Rupandehi district is revered as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, and the Maya Devi Temple marking his birth site forms the core of a UNESCO World Heritage Site visited by Buddhist pilgrims from across the world. Nearby Kapilvastu preserves the ruins of Tilaurakot, believed to be the ancient Shakya kingdom's capital. The Terai districts of Dang, Banke and Bardiya are home to the indigenous Tharu people, known for stick dances, longhouses and forest-based traditions. In the hills, Magar communities are dominant across Rolpa, Pyuthan and Rukum East, while Palpa's hill town of Tansen retains a Newar merchant heritage visible in its old town and the Rani Mahal palace.
