FAQs

Three Passes is the Everest region's most complete high altitude route, linking the Base Camp trail, the Gokyo valley and the classic Khumbu villages by way of three passes above 5,300m, each requiring an early, cold start and several hours of exposed high altitude walking.

It is built for trekkers who already have some high altitude experience, or who want the Everest region's full range of terrain and views in a single trip rather than choosing between them.

Trip highlights

Featured Hotels

Cross all three of the Everest region's high passes, Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m) and Renjo La (5,360 m), in one loop.

Stand at Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), then climb Kala Patthar (5,545 m) before dawn to watch sunrise reach Everest's summit.

Swap the 8am MRT crush for pre-dawn starts on pass days, headlamp on, with the only timetable set by daylight and weather.

Cross the Cho La glacier in microspikes, the most technical stretch of the whole loop, with Cholatse towering alongside.

Walk across the Ngozumpa Glacier to Gokyo, on the shore of turquoise lakes protected as a Ramsar wetland.

Look back over the Gokyo lakes to Everest, Lhotse and Makalu from the top of Renjo La, the last of the three passes.

Return through Thame, where Tenzing Norgay grew up, down a quiet valley that most Everest trekkers never walk.

Arrival in Kathmandu and Welcome Dinner

Hotel Barahi Kathmandu

Dinner

Fly nonstop from Changi Airport and land at Tribhuvan International Airport around five hours after take-off. An HSJ Travel representative meets you at arrivals with your name on a card, and the 30-minute drive to your hotel runs on horns, gaps between motorbikes and a patience that no Singapore expressway has ever needed.

Check into the Mercure Kathmandu Sukedhara Heights and spend the afternoon as you like. In the evening your guide joins you for a welcome dinner and a full briefing: the Lukla flight, the order of the three passes, the pre-dawn starts on pass days, and what tomorrow's gear check needs to cover. It is the only evening of the trip with no plan for the morning.

Summary: Airport pickup and a 30-minute drive to your Kathmandu hotel (1,400 m). A free afternoon, then a welcome dinner and trip briefing with your guide.

Breakfast

After breakfast, set out on one last full day in the city, and the last with reliable hot water and full phone signal for more than two weeks. With your guide and a private vehicle, visit Boudhanath Stupa, where pilgrims circle the white dome clockwise spinning prayer wheels, and the city's other Hindu and Buddhist landmarks at your pace.

This afternoon your guide checks your kit piece by piece, fits the loaned down jacket and sleeping bag, and makes sure you have microspikes for the Cho La glacier (Thamel and Namche shops sell and rent them). Your duffel is weighed for the porter: 15 kg shared between two trekkers. In peak season the Ramechhap drive starts around 2 to 3 am, so dinner and bed are early.

Summary: Guided visit to Boudhanath and other heritage sites, then a full gear check including Cho La microspikes. Early night. Overnight in Kathmandu (1,400 m).
