Langtang Region
Nepal's closest trekking region to Kathmandu, and its Tamang heartland.
Trekking in the Langtang Region
The Langtang Region sits directly north of Kathmandu, making it the most accessible major trekking area in Nepal, reachable by road in under a day rather than a mountain flight. It's centred on Langtang National Park, Nepal's first Himalayan national park, and the Langtang valley itself, framed by Langtang Lirung at 7,227m.
The classic route follows the Langtang valley from Syabrubesi up to Kyanjin Gompa, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery village known for its yak cheese factory and views of the surrounding peaks, with a side trip to the Tserko Ri viewpoint at 4,984m. A second route climbs east to Gosaikunda, a sacred alpine lake at 4,380m and an important Hindu pilgrimage site, particularly during the annual Janai Purnima festival.
Langtang village was largely destroyed by a landslide triggered by the 2015 earthquake, and the valley's communities have since rebuilt; trekking here today directly supports that recovery, with the trail infrastructure now well restored.
