Bhaktapur

A living museum of Newari art, pottery and medieval splendour

Bhaktapur is the best-preserved of the Kathmandu Valley's three medieval Newar cities, its Durbar Square often described as the valley's most intact showcase of Malla-era architecture.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square forms part of the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside the pottery workshops of nearby Thimi and the sunrise viewpoint town of Nagarkot on the district's eastern rim.

The city's pedestrianised brick streets and squares make it one of the most walkable heritage destinations in the entire valley.

Culture

People & Culture

Bhaktapur is a historic Newar city, its Durbar Square (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, whc.unesco.org/en/list/121) largely rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake while preserving its original layout and carved wood and stone detail. Thimi, on the city's outskirts, remains a living centre of Newari pottery and mask-making, with potters still using traditional wheel techniques passed down through generations. Bhaktapur's own Bisket Jatra, a chariot festival marking the Nepali New Year, is among the valley's most dramatic public festivals.
