Dolakha

Mystical Bhimeshwor temple and the dramatic ridgelines of eastern Bagmati

Dolakha is a mountain district east of Kathmandu, home to the revered Bhimeshwor temple and Charikot, gateway to the remote Rolwaling valley and Gaurishankar Himal.

The Dolakha Bhimsen temple, dedicated to Bhimsen, is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the eastern hills, drawing worshippers from across the region.

Charikot and neighbouring Jiri, the historic starting point of the original Everest approach trek, continue to serve trekkers heading into Rolwaling and the eastern Himalaya.

People & Culture

Dolakha is home to Newar communities in its historic bazaar towns and Sherpa and Tamang communities in its higher Rolwaling valley villages. The Bhimsen temple, rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake, remains central to local religious life, while Jiri's Swiss-built agricultural heritage, dating to 1950s development projects, still shapes the town's character today.
