Kavrepalanchok

Rolling hills, Namobuddha monastery and peaceful valley retreats

Kavrepalanchok is a hill district just east of Kathmandu, offering rolling valley scenery, Newari heritage towns and one of the region's most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites.

Namobuddha, where Buddhist tradition holds the Buddha in a former life fed his body to a starving tigress, draws pilgrims and monasteries to a hilltop within a day trip of the capital.

Nearby Dhulikhel and Panauti add Himalayan viewpoints and Newari temple architecture, while Balthali's terraced village makes for a quiet overnight escape.

Culture

People & Culture

Kavrepalanchok is home to Newar communities in its historic towns, including Panauti, built at the confluence of two rivers and home to some of the valley's oldest surviving temples. Namobuddha remains an active Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage site, with several monasteries built around the hilltop stupa. Dhulikhel's Newari old town and Balthali's farming villages round out a district shaped as much by living tradition as by scenery.
