Rolpa
Remote gorges, Jaljala meadows and the rugged spirit of Rukum's neighbour
Rolpa is a remote hill district in Lumbini Province, its steep gorges and high Jaljala meadows sitting on the edge of Nepal's far-western wilderness.
Liwang, the district capital, serves as the main gateway to Rolpa's highlands, an area historically significant as the origin point of Nepal's 1996-2006 Maoist insurgency.
Today the district's rugged scenery and traditional Magar villages draw a small but growing number of trekkers exploring western Nepal's less-visited hills.

People & Culture
Rolpa is a historic heartland of the Magar people, whose traditional culture and hill farming remain central to village life across the district. Rolpa's Jaljala highlands hold both natural and historical significance, having been at the centre of Nepal's decade-long Maoist insurgency before the 2006 peace accord, a history now part of the district's modern identity alongside its scenery.
