Palpa

Medieval Tansen perched on the hill, where craft and history meet

Palpa is a mid-hill district centred on Tansen, a medieval Newari trading town perched above the Kali Gandaki, long a stop on routes between the Terai and Pokhara.

Rani Mahal, an ornate riverside palace sometimes called Nepal's Taj Mahal, was built in 1896 as a monument to a Rana-era queen and remains one of the district's most photographed sites.

Palpa Durbar and the temple town of Ridi Bazaar round out a district shaped by centuries of trade, craft and Newari settlement in the western hills.

Culture

People & Culture

Palpa is home to a historic Newar trading community in Tansen, known for its metalwork, spice trade and the Palpali Dhaka fabric produced locally. Ridi Bazaar, on the Kali Gandaki, is considered sacred for the shaligram stones found in its riverbed, worshipped as a natural form of Vishnu. Tansen's hillside old town, with its narrow lanes and Newari architecture, has changed relatively little since its trading heyday.
