Rupandehi

Where the Buddha was born — Lumbini's sacred gardens and world peace

Rupandehi is home to Lumbini, the UNESCO World Heritage birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, and one of Buddhism's four most sacred pilgrimage sites.

The Lumbini Sacred Garden holds the Maya Devi Temple and an Ashokan pillar erected in the 3rd century BCE, confirming the site as the Buddha's birthplace, alongside monasteries built by Buddhist nations from across the world.

Bhairahawa (Siddharthanagar), the district's main gateway city, connects Lumbini to Gautam Buddha Airport, while Butwal serves as western Nepal's wider commercial hub.

People & Culture

Rupandehi's religious landscape spans Hindu and Buddhist Terai communities, with Lumbini itself drawing pilgrims and monastics from Theravada and Mahayana traditions worldwide, each represented by their own monastery within the Lumbini Development Zone. The nearby Ramagrama Stupa is believed to hold one of the original, undisturbed relic deposits of the Buddha, never opened even by Emperor Ashoka. Bhairahawa and Butwal's growth as commercial gateways has added a more everyday Terai trading culture alongside Lumbini's pilgrimage economy.
