Rukum East
High alpine meadows, yak pastures and the far-western Himalayan frontier
Rukum East is a high alpine district on Lumbini Province's far-western Himalayan frontier, its meadows and yak pastures bordering Karnali Province.
The district was carved from the former, larger Rukum district during Nepal's 2017 federal restructuring, splitting it between Lumbini and Karnali provinces.
Rukum East remains one of the least-developed districts for tourism in the province, appealing to travellers seeking genuine high-altitude remoteness.

Culture
People & Culture
Rukum East is home to Magar and Kham Magar communities, whose herding and high-pasture farming traditions are adapted to the district's alpine terrain. Limited road access has kept much of Rukum East isolated even by the standards of Nepal's remote mid-western hills, preserving traditional yak-herding practices in its higher pastures.
