Gokyo Lakes
Emerald alpine lakes mirroring the giants of the Himalaya
The Gokyo Lakes are a chain of six sacred glacial lakes in the Ngozumpa Glacier valley at altitudes between 4,700 and 5,000 metres. The third lake, beside Gokyo village, is the most iconic — a vivid turquoise mirror reflecting Cho Oyu, the sixth-highest mountain in the world. The climb to Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) at dawn rivals Kala Patthar as the finest panoramic viewpoint in Nepal, offering unobstructed views of four 8,000-metre peaks simultaneously. The route is part of the demanding Three Passes Trek and is a quieter alternative to the main EBC trail.
