Lobuche Peak
A permitted trekking peak above the Khumbu glacier
Lobuche East rises to 6,119m above the Khumbu glacier and sits on the Nepal Mountaineering Association's permitted list, which is why it is so often added to an Everest Base Camp itinerary as a first Himalayan summit. Lobuche West, at 6,145m, is a separate and considerably harder mountain: the two are joined by a long ridge and are not climbed together.
The normal route runs from a high camp onto the east ridge, with fixed rope on the summit slopes and real glacier travel below them. It is a climb rather than a walk, and it needs crampons, a harness and a guide qualified to lead it. Most parties acclimatise on the way in through Namche and Dingboche before going up, and many pair it with the walk to Everest Base Camp.
