Tengboche Monastery
A sacred hilltop monastery with Everest as its backdrop
Tengboche Monastery (Thyangboche Gompa) at 3,867 metres is the most celebrated Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu region and one of the most photographed spots in Nepal. Rebuilt after a 1989 fire, the monastery belongs to the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and hosts the spectacular Mani Rimdu festival each autumn. Trekkers arriving at dawn are rewarded with golden light on Ama Dablam, Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse. The monastery complex includes a nunnery, a museum, and a traditional butter-lamp hall open to respectful visitors.
