Trekking in the Everest Region

The Everest Region, also known as the Khumbu, is one of the world's most famous trekking destinations and home to Mount Everest, the highest mountain on Earth. Located in northeastern Nepal within the protected landscapes of Sagarmatha National Park, the region offers an extraordinary combination of Himalayan scenery, legendary trekking routes, Sherpa culture and Tibetan Buddhist heritage.

Most Everest Region trekking journeys begin with a mountain flight to Lukla, the main gateway to the Khumbu. From here, trails pass through traditional Sherpa settlements, rhododendron and pine forests, deep river valleys and dramatic suspension bridges before gradually climbing into the high Himalayas. The classic route follows the Dudh Koshi River valley through Phakding towards Namche Bazaar, the main Sherpa trading centre and an important acclimatisation stop for trekkers heading towards Everest Base Camp and other high-altitude destinations.

Beyond Namche Bazaar, the trails lead towards iconic Himalayan locations including Tengboche Monastery, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp. Along the way, trekkers experience spectacular views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori and other Himalayan peaks. The journey is as much about the mountain villages, culture and landscapes as it is about reaching a famous destination.

The Everest Region offers trekking experiences for different levels of adventure. The legendary Everest Base Camp Trek is the region's most popular journey, while the Gokyo Lakes Trek combines turquoise glacial lakes with panoramic Himalayan viewpoints. The challenging Everest Three Passes Trek connects remote valleys by crossing high mountain passes including Kongma La, Cho La and Renjo La.
