Tanahun

Seti River gorge, Bandipur's hilltop charm and unspoilt pastoral beauty

Tanahun is a mid-hill district between Kathmandu and Pokhara, home to Bandipur, one of Nepal's most perfectly preserved Newari hill bazaar towns.

Bandipur's pedestrian-only main street and 19th-century trading-post architecture have made it a well-known stop for travellers moving along the Prithvi Highway.

The district's Seti River carves a dramatic, largely hidden gorge on its way toward Pokhara, adding a natural counterpoint to Bandipur's heritage streets.

Culture

People & Culture

Tanahun is home to Magar and Newar communities, the latter concentrated in Bandipur, which grew wealthy as a trading post on the old India-Tibet trade route before the Prithvi Highway bypassed it in the 1970s. That bypass, paradoxically, is what preserved Bandipur's original Newari architecture largely untouched by modern development.
