Madhya Pradesh
The heart of India — tigers and temples
Madhya Pradesh, at India's geographic centre, holds more tiger reserves than any other Indian state, including Bandhavgarh and Kanha national parks, giving it the informal title of India's tiger state. Khajuraho's cluster of 10th and 11th-century temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for their intricate carvings, and the ancient Buddhist stupas of Sanchi represent over a thousand years of continuous religious architecture.
Bhopal, the state capital, sits among a cluster of artificial lakes and blends old-city Mughal-era architecture with a planned modern district. Madhya Pradesh's forests cover roughly a quarter of its land area, among the highest shares in India, supporting both its tiger population and a significant tribal population, including the Gond and Bhil communities, across its central plateau.
