Gateway to India's Northeast — tea and wildlife
Assam is the gateway to India's Northeast, a Brahmaputra River valley state famous as the source of Assam tea, which accounts for a large share of India's total tea production and is grown across estates that stretch along the river's floodplain. Guwahati, the state's largest city, sits on the Brahmaputra's banks and serves as the main air and rail hub for the wider Northeast region.
Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protects the largest population of the greater one-horned rhinoceros anywhere in the world, alongside wild elephants and Bengal tigers across its floodplain grasslands. Assam is also home to a mix of Assamese, Bodo and other indigenous communities, and its Majuli island, one of the world's largest river islands, remains a centre of Assamese Vaishnavite culture and monastery life.
