Haryana
Agricultural state bordering the capital region
Haryana surrounds India's capital territory on three sides and forms part of the National Capital Region, its city of Gurugram (Gurgaon) having grown into one of India's major corporate and finance hubs since the 1990s. The state was carved out of Punjab in 1966 and shares much of the same fertile Indo-Gangetic farmland, making it one of India's leading producers of wheat and rice.
Kurukshetra, in the state's north, is revered as the setting of the Mahabharata and the site where the Bhagavad Gita is traditionally believed to have been spoken, drawing Hindu pilgrims to its sacred tanks and temples. Haryana's dual identity, agricultural heartland alongside Gurugram's glass-tower skyline, makes it one of India's more economically contrasted states.
