Delhi (NCT)
India's capital territory
Delhi, India's National Capital Territory, has served as the seat of power for successive empires for over a thousand years, from the Delhi Sultanate to the Mughals and British India, leaving a layered urban landscape of seven historic cities within the modern metropolis. The Red Fort and Qutub Minar, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, sit alongside Lutyens' Delhi's colonial-era government buildings and India Gate war memorial.
Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk market, laid out in the 17th century under Shah Jahan, remains one of India's oldest and busiest bazaars, while New Delhi's broad avenues house the country's parliament and central government. As part of India's Golden Triangle circuit with Agra and Jaipur, Delhi is typically the first stop for most international visitors to India, and its Indira Gandhi International Airport is the country's busiest.
