Andhra Pradesh
Coastal state of temples and beaches
Andhra Pradesh is a coastal state on India's southeastern seaboard, its roughly 975-kilometre Bay of Bengal coastline the longest of any Indian state. Its temple towns, Tirupati's Sri Venkateswara Temple among the world's most-visited pilgrimage sites, sit alongside the historic Buddhist stupas of Amaravati and the colonial port city of Visakhapatnam, the state's largest urban centre and a major naval base.
The state is bisected by the Krishna and Godavari rivers, whose deltas support some of India's most productive rice farmland, while Araku Valley's coffee-growing hills offer a cooler counterpoint to the coastal plains. Telugu-language cinema and cuisine, especially its distinctively spicy Andhra food, give the state a cultural identity distinct from neighbouring Telangana, from which it was separated in 2014.
