Jammu and Kashmir
Paradise on Earth — lakes and mountains
Jammu and Kashmir, in India's northernmost Himalayan reaches, spans the subtropical Jammu plains, the Kashmir Valley's lakes and gardens, and high mountain passes bordering Pakistan and China. Srinagar's Dal Lake, with its floating houseboats and Mughal-era gardens such as Shalimar Bagh, gave the valley its long-standing reputation as paradise on Earth among Mughal emperors who summered there.
Vaishno Devi, one of Hinduism's most-visited pilgrimage shrines, draws millions of pilgrims each year on a steep hillside trek near Katra in the Jammu region, while Gulmarg's ski slopes and cable car, among the highest in the world, make it a major winter-sports destination. Jammu and Kashmir became a union territory in 2019 following the reorganisation of the former state, with Ladakh separated into its own union territory the same year.
