Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu
Small coastal and inland union territory
Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu is a small union territory formed in 2020 by merging two former Portuguese colonial enclaves, an inland district and a pair of coastal towns roughly 100 kilometres apart on India's western coast. Like Goa, Daman and Diu remained under Portuguese rule until 1961, and their forts, churches and old-town architecture reflect over four centuries of Portuguese colonial presence.
Diu's 16th-century Portuguese fort overlooks the Arabian Sea and its beaches offer a quieter alternative to Goa's more developed coast, while inland Nagar Haveli's forested hills are home to the Warli and other tribal communities known for their distinctive geometric wall painting. The territory's dual coastal and inland character, and its exemption from Gujarat's alcohol prohibition, has made Daman and Diu a popular weekend destination for nearby Gujarat and Maharashtra.
