Lakshadweep
India's smallest union territory — coral atolls
Lakshadweep is India's smallest union territory, a chain of 36 coral islands and atolls in the Arabian Sea roughly 300 kilometres off the Kerala coast, of which only about ten are inhabited. Its lagoons and reefs, part of the same coral system as the Maldives further south, hold some of India's clearest waters and least-developed coastline, protected by strict permit requirements for both Indian and foreign visitors.
Agatti and Bangaram islands host most of the territory's limited tourist infrastructure, offering diving and snorkelling among reef systems largely undisturbed by mass tourism. The territory's population is almost entirely Muslim, with a matrilineal social structure and Malayalam-related Jeseri dialect distinct from mainland Kerala, and its remoteness has kept Lakshadweep one of the least-visited parts of India.
