Chandigarh
India's first planned city — Le Corbusier's modernist vision framed by the Shivalik foothills
Chandigarh is India's first fully planned city, designed in the 1950s by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier as the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana after Partition split the original Punjab capital, Lahore, into Pakistan. Its grid of numbered sectors, wide tree-lined avenues and modernist government buildings, including the Capitol Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, remain a rare complete example of mid-20th-century architectural planning.
The Rock Garden, built secretly over decades by government official Nekchand Saini from industrial and household waste, has become one of the city's most visited attractions and a striking counterpoint to Le Corbusier's formal planning. Framed by the Shivalik foothills of the Himalaya, Chandigarh consistently ranks among India's cleanest and most liveable cities.
