Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Remote tropical islands in the Bay of Bengal
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands form a remote archipelago of over 570 islands in the Bay of Bengal, roughly 1,300 kilometres from mainland India and closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than to the Indian coast. Port Blair, the territory's capital, holds the Cellular Jail, a former British colonial prison used to detain Indian independence activists, now preserved as a national memorial.
Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep) and Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep) are known for some of India's clearest waters and coral reefs, drawing scuba divers to sites rarely found elsewhere in the country. Several Nicobar and Andaman tribal groups, including the Sentinelese on North Sentinel Island, remain among the most isolated peoples on Earth and are protected from outside contact under Indian law.
