Karnataka
Tech hub with palaces, coffee hills and coast
Karnataka spans India's southwestern Deccan plateau and Arabian Sea coastline, home to Bengaluru, the country's leading information-technology hub and a base for thousands of tech companies and startups since the 1990s. The state's Hoysala-era temples at Belur and Halebidu and the ruined 14th-century capital of Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflect over a thousand years of South Indian dynastic history.
Coorg (Kodagu), in the Western Ghats, is one of India's major coffee-growing regions, its misty hills producing a significant share of the country's coffee alongside cardamom and pepper. Karnataka's coastline around Gokarna and Karwar offers a quieter alternative to Goa's beaches, while Bandipur and Nagarhole national parks form part of one of India's largest contiguous tiger habitats.
