Janakpur, also known as Janakpur Dham, is one of Nepal's most sacred cities and the legendary birthplace of Goddess Sita, consort of Lord Ram. The city is home to the magnificent Janaki Mandir, a grand temple built in Mughal-Rajput architectural style dedicated to Sita.The city's spiritual atmosphere, colourful Maithili artwork, and vibrant festivals like Vivah Panchami, celebrating the divine wedding of Ram and Sita, make it a must-visit religious and cultural destination.

The Janaki Mandir was completed in 1910 and paid for by Brishabhanu Kumari, queen of Tikamgarh in central India, which is why its style belongs to north Indian palace architecture rather than to anything else in Nepal. Janakpur is the capital of Madhesh Province and the centre of the Maithili language, and is reached from Kathmandu by a short flight or about eight hours by road.
