Dhaulagiri

Dhaulagiri is an 8,167 metre peak in Myagdi district, the seventh highest mountain in the world and the highest peak located entirely within the borders of a single country. It was first climbed in 1960. On clear days it is visible from high points on the Ghorepani and Poon Hill side of the Annapurna Base Camp trek, on the opposite side of the Kali Gandaki valley from the Annapurna range.

For about thirty years in the early 19th century Dhaulagiri was believed to be the highest mountain in the world, until surveying moved that title first to Kangchenjunga and then to Everest. It was first climbed on 13 May 1960 by a Swiss, Austrian and Nepali team, the only 8,000m first ascent supported by an aircraft landing high on the mountain. The Dhaulagiri Circuit crosses two passes above 5,000m and is a camping route with no lodges on it.
