Manaslu

Manaslu rises to 8,163m in Gorkha district and is the world's eighth highest mountain. The name comes from the Sanskrit for intellect or spirit, and the massif is also known locally as Kutang.

It was first climbed on 9 May 1956 by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu on a Japanese expedition, and Japanese parties returned to it so often afterwards that the mountain came to be thought of as theirs in the way Everest was once thought of as British. An earlier attempt was turned back partly by opposition from villagers at Sama, who held an expedition responsible for avalanche damage to their gompa. Manaslu has one of the higher fatality rates among the eight thousanders. Most visitors see it from the Manaslu Circuit, the route around the massif over the Larkya La at about 5,106m, which needs a restricted area permit and a registered guide.
