Liwang

Liwang is the administrative headquarters of Rolpa District in western Nepal, situated in the mid-hill terrain of the Rapti River watershed. The town serves as the main service hub for Rolpa District and a base for exploring the traditional Magar communities and forested hill landscapes of the region.The Rolpa highlands offer excellent opportunities for village trekking and cultural encounters with Magar communities who maintain their traditional dress, festivals, and agricultural way of life in the beautiful Rapti valley hills.

Rolpa is the district where the Maoist insurgency began in 1996, and Liwang's growth since the conflict ended in 2006 has followed the road building that came with reconstruction. The high pasture at Jaljala, walked from Liwang in two to three days, is used both for trekking and for the annual gatherings that keep the period in local memory.
