Asura Cave
Guru Rinpoche's meditation cave above Pharping
Asura Cave is a small meditation cave in the forested hill directly behind Pharping, a Newar village about an hour's drive south of Kathmandu. Tibetan Buddhists revere it as a place where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) meditated, and it is also known as the upper cave of Yangleshö. A short, steep walk of about ten minutes, with many steps, climbs from the village through the trees to a small monastery and the cave. Beside the entrance, pilgrims press their hands into a handprint in the rock attributed to Guru Rinpoche, among butter lamps and prayer flags.
