Langtang Lirung
The highest peak of the Langtang Himal, towering directly above the Langtang Valley Trek.
Langtang Lirung rises to 7,227m in Rasuwa district, about 60km north of Kathmandu, and is the highest peak of the Langtang Himal. Though modest by 8,000m standards, it has an unusually large vertical relief, climbing roughly 5,500m above the Trisuli Gandaki valley floor in a horizontal distance of only 16km.
It dominates the skyline for nearly the entire Langtang Valley Trek, the peak most closely associated with the region's name.
The mountain was not climbed until 1978, when a Japanese and Nepali party reached the summit, and it has had few ascents since: the relief that makes it so striking from below also makes it a serious and avalanche prone climb. It is the peak standing behind the rebuilt village of Langtang and above Kyanjin Gompa, and the ice that fell onto the old village in 2015 came off its flanks.
