Langtang Valley

Langtang Valley is a spectacular trekking destination in Rasuwa District, often called the 'valley of glaciers.' Located just north of Kathmandu, it is the closest Himalayan trek from the capital and offers stunning mountain scenery without requiring internal flights.The valley is home to the Tamang and Tibetan communities whose culture, language, and architecture reflect their Tibetan heritage. The Langtang National Park protects the valley's rich biodiversity including red pandas, snow leopards, and Himalayan tahr.

Langtang village was buried by an avalanche set off by the 2015 earthquake, with the loss of most of its people, and has been rebuilt on safer ground a short way from the original, which is now marked by a memorial. That history is part of what walking the valley means today. Langtang National Park, gazetted in 1976, was the first in the Nepal Himalaya. The trail starts at Syabrubesi, seven to eight hours by road from Kathmandu, and most itineraries finish at Kyanjin Gompa at about 3,870m with a climb to Tserko Ri above it. The Tamang Heritage Trail joins on the way in.
