Jumla

Apple orchards at altitude and the ancient kingdom gateway to Karnali

Jumla is home to the Sinja Valley, widely credited by linguists as the birthplace of the Nepali language, and the seat of the medieval Khas Malla kingdom.

Jumla town itself, at around 2,300 metres, is known for apple orchards grown at unusually high altitude and for the Chandannath Temple overlooking the valley.

The district serves as a gateway to wider Karnali Province, with Churta Waterfall and the Jumla Valley's farmland rounding out its highland scenery.

People & Culture

Jumla is a cultural cradle for Karnali's Khas communities, whose older name for the Nepali language, Khas Kura, derives directly from this region's historic Khasa Malla kingdom, centred on Sinja Valley. Chandannath Temple remains an important pilgrimage site tied to this heritage, and Jumla's high-altitude apple orchards, a rarity at this elevation in Nepal, have become a distinctive part of the district's modern identity.
