Mugu
Rara Lake's sapphire waters hidden in Nepal's most untouched wilderness
Mugu is home to Rara Lake, Nepal's largest lake, set inside Rara National Park at nearly 3,000 metres in one of the country's most untouched wilderness areas.
The lake's deep blue water, ringed by pine and spruce forest, remains one of Nepal's least-visited major natural landmarks, reached by a multi-day trek or a flight to a nearby airstrip.
Mugu's remoteness, with limited road access across the district, has kept both Rara and its surrounding villages largely undisturbed by mass tourism.

Culture
People & Culture
Mugu is home to a mix of Khas hill communities and Tibetan-influenced Bhotia populations in its higher villages, reflecting Karnali Province's broader cultural divide between mid-hill and high-Himalayan settlement. Limited infrastructure across the district has preserved traditional farming and herding practices largely unchanged, with Rara National Park's creation adding a conservation dimension to the area's remoteness.
